Smith: Voting for advocates of affordable housing — Fig City News

I’ll vote for Council candidates who’ve consistently advocated for more affordable housing: At-Large Councilors in Ward 4, Cyrus Dahmubed and Josh Krintzman; in Ward 5, Brittany Charm; and in Ward 6, Sean Roche; and for Ward-Only Councilor representing my own Ward 5, Garry Miller.

“I have been a longtime critic of his, and I feel strongly that the city councilors should be independent of the mayor, to engage the mayor in thoughtful, civil and informed debate on the issues.,” Roche said.

Roche called out Laredo on the endorsements process, or lack thereof, and said it doesn’t give him confidence in Laredo’s ability to unite the city and school district when big matters like Proposition 2 ½ overrides come up.

“What does it say that the all-but-certain-to-be mayor releases a full slate of official endorsements, just two days after the campaign season has begun, putting his thumb on the scale before any of the candidates have had a chance to introduce themselves to Newton residents?” Roche asked. “It’s why we need independent voices in city government, to provide checks and balances.”

Roche said he’s running for City Council now because he feels like giving more back to the city he’s raised a family in and called home for a quarter century.

“I like to think that it’s my turn to serve this way,” he said.
